Engine mounts

Postby ronin on Sat Mar 24, 2007 7:25 am

The engine mounts in the Lotus suck, once you've made more power...Under hard acceleration and braking the engine will move from two to three inches upsetting the balance of the car......Now if you don't want to feel as though your driving over a shitty section of road here is what you should do..at least this is what I've done and it works...
I removed the fore and aft engine mounts and drilled a few more holes and roughened up the soft rubber mounts, then filled them with a 80 liquid urethane......Now this is how a high performance car should feel...Not some candy ass taffy bull shit but a car that responds as it should...

Holy Fuck I love this forum!!! So much useful information.

I have had a problem since day one of owning my car and that is when I do an aggresive shift from 1st to second I sometimes get a huge metal on metal sounding clunk coming from behind me. I have always assumed it was the motor twisting and hitting the motor mounts. Does that sound right to you Frank? I am worried that with the new clutch and Tripoint kit (if I ever get it going) this will be happening all the time :( Maybe this is the miracle cure?

Is the stock engine mount so soft principally because Lotus wanted to provide vibration isolation to the chassis, or is it to protect the chassis from too much shock? With the stiffer mount, do you notice much more engine vibration? Do you think there is risk of causing fatigue in other elements due to the greater shock and vibration that is transmitted through the stiffer mount?

The stock mount is Toyota and is a very soft rubber..as far as fatigue goes I'll let you know when I'm done with a car that handles and responds better than a stocker.....It is not a solid urethane mount and there is very little vibration transmitted......I'm not saying anyone should do this, it just works for me and really that's all I care about....

That is what I was thinking it would be like, somewhere between the feel of the stock mounts and a solid urethane mount.

I just hope it solves my clunking issue cause I hate hearing that when I shift aggresively.

If the mount's are exactly like the Celica ones you can get these too:
http://www.ptuning.com/html/search-result.cfm?keyword=PT8-1101

They are listed under Matrix , but they fit the celica mounts......I did mine a while back ....a bunch of people have ordered from this site also with no problems whatsoever!

Sweet, that is really close to me. I may just buy new Celica mounts like manny suggested and then there will be less downtime waiting for eurathane to cure. I can get them at cost since I have a friend who owns a Toyota dealership. That will give me both versions too in case the vibration is too harsh, I like options.

I got the urethane from Tri-Point...It is a 80 hardness.....I think any premolded incerts may pop out a bit under compression loads, by pouring the urethane you have a strong bond between both sides....The bracket from elise parts is for the S1 and will not work on our cars....
